Angel Chavez graduated in 2009 with a BA in Mathematics from the University of Colorado. He spent the
next six years studying mathematics in the majestic Sonoran Desert. In 2015, Angel received a PhD in
Mathematics from the University of Arizona under Doug Pickrell. Angel held the positions of Postdoctoral
Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor at Pomona College and Visiting Assistant Professor at Regis
University. He is now a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Bucknell
University in Pennsylvania.
Angel’s mathematical interests involve aspects of probability, graph theory and combinatorics.
Collaborating with undergraduates is important to Angel, and he frequently seeks to engage
undergraduates in research projects. Professor Chavez has coauthored papers with eight undergraduate
students on topics related to probability and spectral graph theory. He is ever grateful to his coauthors for
their curiosity and eagerness to learn.
Student outreach is very important to Angel, and he actively participates in programs aimed at increasing
access for first-generation students and students from underrepresented groups. The Pomona College
Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) program is a college access program aimed at preparing students,
particularly from underrepresented communities, for college. In this program, local high school students
are invited to live on the Pomona College campus for two months during the summer, where they take
several courses taught by Pomona College faculty. Angel has taught the mathematics course for the
rising juniors in the PAYS program for several summers, and in 2022, he had the honor of seeing one of
his PAYS students graduate from Pomona College with a BA in Mathematics. These types of remarkable
experiences are one of many reasons why Angel values outreach.
