Jenna Race is a non-traditional first-generation community college student. She studies mathematics at Century College in White Bear Lake, MN. In 2021, she was awarded the Century College Foundation Mathematics Scholarship. For two years Jenna worked as a peer math tutor in the Century College Math Resource Center. In addition to being a student, Jenna works full-time for Metro Transit in Minneapolis, MN as an Associate Communications Specialist.
Jenna’s path to math was not linear. She started and stopped college several times. She eventually resumed college in her early 30’s but started studying business rather than math. In 2021 Jenna earned her first degree from Century College, an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. She decided to change majors to math after taking and excelling in College Algebra and Statistics. Jenna credits her success in mathematics to the support she received from her professors, mentors, and helpful friends from Math Twitter.
Jenna is an organizer for the Online Undergraduate Resource Fair for the Advancement and Alliance of Marginalized Mathematicians (OURFA2M2) conference, which aims to support and provide resources to marginalized undergraduate students.
“I don't have many Hispanic role models. Until recently, I didn't know of any Hispanic mathematicians or folks in STEM fields. Having a time to recognize and celebrate Hispanics and their accomplishments is important to me and others getting started in mathematics.”
